We are pleased to announce that the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) has been chosen as the recipient of the 2024 United Nations Day Honour, awarded by the United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) in New South Wales. This prestigious accolade recognises IEP’s significant contributions to the understanding, training and research about those factors that internationally influence world peace, and its alignment with the principles of universal peace and security as defined by the United Nations.
The United Nations Day Honour is a recognition awarded annually to individuals or organisations that exemplify the values and goals of the United Nations. As the leading organisation promoting the UN’s objectives in Australia, UNAA aims to inform and inspire Australians to take part in creating a safer, fairer, and more sustainable world. In this light, we are incredibly proud that IEP’s work has been acknowledged as part of this legacy.
IEP’s commitment to advancing peace through research, education, and public policy is evident in our flagship Global Peace Index, a comprehensive measure of peace in 163 countries. Our data-driven approach helps the world better understand the complex factors influencing peace and security, from economic resilience to societal cohesion. The UNAA NSW has cited our contributions as exemplary of the spirit and ambitions of the United Nations’ vision, including the Secretary General’s New Agenda for Peace – a strategic priority for 2024.
Our work doesn’t stop at measurement. We have been actively involved in peacebuilding efforts worldwide by developing training programs, fostering dialogue, and promoting peace economics – demonstrating that peace is achievable and measurable. This Award is a testament to our ongoing efforts and commitment to making peace more accessible through practical insights and innovative solutions.
We are honoured to join the ranks of previous recipients, including WWF Australia (2023), Reconciliation Australia (2019) and The Australian Red Cross (2017). These organisations have made profound impacts in their respective fields, and we are humbled to be recognised alongside them for our contribution to global peace. The official presentation of the 2024 United Nations Day Honour will take place at the UNAA NSW Gala Dinner on November 13th, 2024, at Parliament House in Sydney.
This recognition not only highlights the importance of our work but also reinforces our mission to push the boundaries of how peace is understood and achieved in today’s complex global environment. We look forward to continuing to provide ground-breaking insights and contributing to a more peaceful world.
