A new volunteer-run café has opened its doors in Sydney, the result of IEP’s Positive Peace training and the Cohesive Communities COMPACT Partnership project. Supported by Multicultural NSW, this initiative is hosted by the Police & Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Glebe and brings together community-building and skills development.
Local students have taken a central role in establishing the café. They’ve received barista training and are now putting their skills to use, serving coffee and light refreshments. The project aims to encourage positive neighborhood relations while giving students hands-on experience in customer service and leadership.
The initiative aligns with several pillars of Positive Peace, particularly ‘Good Relations with Neighbours’ and ‘High Levels of Human Capital’, as it promotes community engagement and practical skills development supported by local institutions. The café also offers items at reduced prices, making it accessible to families and community members who may be on tighter budgets. This approach aligns with the project’s goal of creating a welcoming space that serves the broader community’s needs.
The café represents a practical outcome of the partnership’s efforts, providing a tangible way for young people to engage with and contribute to their local area. It’s an opportunity for them to gain valuable work experience, while also playing a part in strengthening community bonds.
